Heating a mineral with all coefficients of expansion being positive will result in compressional stress in the outer, heated areas, and tensile stress in the inner, relatively cool areas11 (Figure 3-4).
Cracking through the centre of crystals may also occur as a result of the tensile stress developed in response to compression of the outer, heated areas.
The inability of specimens to shrink radially results in the development of circumferential tensile stress.
Figure 3-21 A system of mud cracks is a common example of fracture perpendicular to a surface as a result of tensile stress in a surface layer due to dehydration.
The resultant tensile stress, if severe enough, will cause a network of fractures perpendicular to the specimen surface (Figure 3.21).
